Wind peels roof off Los Alamos school gym

A blast off wind took part of the roof off a school gym in Los Alamos Wednesday afternoon causing significant damage but no reported injuries. Debris landed on the Barranca Mesa Elementary School library and a pre-school section of the building. Five cars in the parking lot also were damaged. School officials said the wind seemed to come out of nowhere about 1:30 p.m. lifting the top layer of the gym roof.

A parking deck collapse at Montgomery Mall left one person dead and another critically injured on Thursday. Officials expect a long investigation as they try to figure out exactly what happened. Thursday afternoon, the Cabin John Park Volunteer Fire Department tweeted out that its units responded to Westfield Montgomery Mall "for major structure collapse." Later, Montgomery County Fire officials said they got a call at 1:47 p.m. at the location at 7125 Democracy Blvd. They told us a key section of the parking deck collapsed and they were trying to rescue two adults.

Ambulance crashes responding to call

A Virginia Beach ambulance was involved in a crash Thursday afternoon. The crash occurred in the 4000 block of Elbow Road at the intersection of Walpole Street around 2 p.m., Grazia Moyers with the Virginia Beach Police Department said. The city ambulance landed on its side in a ditch and was the only vehicle involved.

Couple rides bridge down as it collapses into Washington state river

Dan Sligh called out to his wife, who had been sitting on the passenger seat beside him. No answer. When a section of a bridge over the Skagit River in Washington State collapsed Thursday evening, plummeting into the current dozens of feet below, it took the couple with it. As they pounded onto the river’s surface, the impact dislocated Sligh’s shoulder.

Florida man stops for beer while running from cops

Andrew Fatzinger, a 21-year-old Florida man, was arrested after a dramatic police chase that involved K-9 officers, a helicopter - and a quick beer stop, CBS Tampa Bay reports. The incident began when police were called to a potential looting early Sunday morning. Their investigation led to the discovery of Fatzinger, who was reportedly caught destroying the home with mustard and illegible writing on the walls, according to the station. The Florida Sun-Sentinel reports the victims of the looting were out of town during the break-in.

Indiana school bus crash leaves dozens injured

A school bus slammed into the back of another bus, setting off a chain-reaction crash involving four buses in northern Indiana, leaving dozens of middle and high students with non-serious injuries and one driver seriously injured. Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Chad Hill said the bus driver was taken by helicopter to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne. He said more than 100 students from Wawasee School Corp. were on the buses when the accident occurred about a mile north of North Webster, about 40 miles west of Fort Wayne.

Moore mayor wants safe-room shelters built in all new homes, while cost of tornado damage could top $2 billion

The mayor of the Oklahoma City suburb that was devastated by a massive tornado Monday says he wants safe-room shelters built in all new homes. Moore Mayor Glen Lewis, on Wednesday, said he will propose an ordinance in the next couple of days at the Moore City Council that would modify building codes to require the construction of reinforced shelters in every new home in the town of 56,000. Lewis says he is confident he’ll get the four votes needed on the six-member council. The measure could be in force within months.

CHP: Coughing big rig driver crashes into canal; 1 dead

A Wisconsin man died Monday afternoon when a semitruck crashed into a canal, caused by a coughing driver, according to the California Highway Patrol. A 37-year-old man from Red Granite, Wisc., was driving the big rig southbound on Highway 99 in the north part of Bakersfield when he started coughing, the CHP said Tuesday. The driver allowed the truck to veer across lanes and plow over guardrails, down an embankment and into an irrigation canal.

Good Samaritans pull driver from creek

Hampton crews worked to pull a vehicle from New Market Creek following a crash Wednesday morning. Cpl. Mary Shackelford with the Hampton Police Division said the crash occurred around 6:45 a.m. at Lasalle Avenue and West Mercury Boulevard. A vehicle was traveling southbound on Lasalle Avenue when it left the roadway and went into the creek. Two nearby residents pulled the only occupant in the vehicle to safety.
